We love being bold, being the best, and getting there first—and we’ve done it again, making cruise history by appointing brothers as co-captains of our fourth award-winning Edge® Series ship, Celebrity Ascent^SM. Captains Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis will be taking the helm in the Caribbean this fall. The brothers will alternate their time on in a three-months on-and-off rotation. Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo had this to say about our dynamic duo: “Captain Dimitrios and Captain Tasos are our star-powered siblings, a maritime dream team. They have given so much to the Celebrity family over the years that we are like a second family.” Here’s a look at their inspiring climb to the bridge of our newest ship.

Captain Dimitrios graduated from the Merchant Maritime Academy of Syros-Athens and received his Master’s license in 2001. He started as an Apprentice Officer on board Celebrity’s very first vessel, Horizon, in 1990, and has since sailed aboard every different class of ship in Celebrity’s fleet. He was part of the startup teams for Celebrity Millennium®, Celebrity Infinity®, Celebrity Silhouette®, was the take-out Captain for Celebrity Apex®, and will repeat the feat for Celebrity Ascent^SM this fall.

Captain Tasos grew up watching his older brother Dimitrios making a career on cruise ships, and realized he wanted to follow in his footsteps. He graduated from the Merchant Marine College and joined Celebrity Cruises in 1998. During that time, he’s been involved in the opening of Celebrity Summit®, Celebrity Solstice®, Celebrity Equinox®, Celebrity Reflection®, and served as captain of Celebrity Edge®, the very first of Celebrity’s award-winning Edge Series®.

“Receiving this distinction with my brother and as part of the Celebrity Cruises family is an incredible honor,” said Captain Tasos. We don’t know who’s more excited, the Kafetzis brothers or us.
